The old style DDR signpost points ahead to Anklam on route 197 and right to Ferdinandshof, which was the terminus of a narrow gauge line from Friedland on the <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mecklenburg-Pommersche_Schmalspurbahn" rel="nofollow">600mm gauge Mecklenburg-Pommersche Schmalspurbahn</a>, 27km distant, which opened to goods traffic to the sugar mill in 1892, and passengers in 1894. At the half-way point, Uhlenhorst, another branch connected with Anklam. Friedland to Uhlenhorst (which had been taken away in 1945 as war reparation by the Soviet Union and relaid in 1946) was closed in 1960, the remainder to Ferdinandshof 6 years later. Friedland was finally closed down as a narrow gauge terminus in 1969 when the remaining line from Anklam via Dennin closed.
