Description

I surprised this jackrabbit during a walk and he darted out of a shrub and started to run away, but then he stopped and looked at me. He knew I was watching him, and instead of standing still or running off as he would if he thought I was a predator, he moved around a little. I spoke to him softly and he just stood there. He even let me reach into my pocket to pull out my camera to photograph him.

At his position in the food chain I suppose he should consider anything bigger than him as a potential threat, but then if he has ever seen people before they probably didn't try to hurt him, and I guess he would have no fear of pronghorns, cattle, horses or burros (all four of which range freely in this part of Nevada). A full grown jackrabbit probably has nothing to fear from the air, so I suspect the only predators he really needs to worry about are coyotes and mountain lions.

Which means if you don't make any startling moves and speak softly you can probably hang out for as long as you want with a desert jackrabbit.

We have a few jackrabbits in our neighborhood in Hidden Valley, but many more of the small cottontails. Our local jackrabbits are far more skittish than the cottontails, and this fellow.
