17 July 2011. A small group of friends sharing one tent - part of a mini tent city in Tahrir Square in the summer of 2011. Although I don't know the political views of these particular individuals, most of the protesters I talked to were united in their belief that, despite the toppling of Mubarak, real change had yet to be achieved. They continued to press for the prosecution of former regime officials and also of those responsible for the killings of protesters during the uprising. Government figures showed that at least 846 people had been killed and six thousand injured during the 18 days that led to the fall of Mubarak but since then only one police officer had been convicted and he wasn't even in court to receive the sentence. On the other hand civilian protesters were being dragged in front of military courts. Human Rights Organizations estimate that in just ten months from 28 January to 10 September 2011, as many as 11,879 people were tried in such courts - more than in the entire period of Mubarak's thirty year dictatorship. Less than a week after this photograph was taken many of the protesters in Tahrir Square marched on the defence ministry to protest against the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) , to demand justice for the martyrs and a fair minimum wage for all Egyptians. In the Cairo district of Abbaseyya their route was blocked by the military and they found thesmelves attacked by men on the roof tops armed with sticks, stones and molotov cocktails. Women and children who tried to retreat back towards Tahrir Square couldn't because the road behind them had been closed by Ministry of Interior security forces. Later some witnesses claimed they had seen soldiers on the roof tops who had taken off their uniforms and others that baltigaya ( thugs paid for by the Ministry of Interior ) had been brought in by bus from the nearby district of Wayli. |
