Description
English: Fright of natives on first seeing a horse. This engraving depicts a scene from around 1851 when David Hazlewood, a Wesleyan Christian missionary stationed at Nadi Bay on the island of Vanua Levu, first introduced the horse to Fiji. The artists for these engravings are unattributed, but some of them may have been done by the wife of Calvert's colleague Rev. Richard Burdsall Lyth, who was a friend of Mrs Calvert and a gifted artist, or they may have been by Thomas Williams, also a talented artist in his own right. [1]
