Summary edit

Description
English: A view from the north side of Chapel Avenue just east of Smith Street in Cheektowaga, New York, looking northeastward toward the Buffalo Niagara International Airport on a pleasant August 2021 evening. Beginning immediately after the Second World War and continuing throughout the 1950s, the green space seen in the photo looked essentially no different than the surrounding area, with suburban tract housing gradually mushrooming on the lots. However, the Buffalo airport later saw an increase in jumbo jet traffic, and - despite vehement opposition from homeowners as well as the Cheektowaga town government, who would have preferred larger aircraft be diverted either to Niagara Falls International Airport or a never-realized new jetport whose construction was proposed variously for the Town of Wheatfield or the vicinity of Batavia - officials voted instead to extend of Runway 5/23 of the existing airport to its present length of 8,100 feet. An unfortunate side effect of that was that the houses that once stood along this half-mile-long, 400-foot-wide swath of land, which otherwise would have been rendered uninhabitable due to constant noise and vibrations from low-flying planes, were condemned and bulldozed at some time in the late 1960s.
