Français : Athéna se trouvait entre deux colonnes dans le passage entre les deux péristyles de la villa des Papyrus. H. 2 m. Traces de l’ancienne dorure qui recouvrait la totalité de la statue. La villa, avec vue sur la mer, à été élevée à la fin de la République par un membre de l'élite, Pison, consul de Rome ; sa fille ayant été la dernière épouse de César, il s'agissait d'un membre de l'élite politique, mais passionné de philosophie épicurienne. Il avait fait construiure cette villa sur un programme architectural pensé en référence au gymnase des Grecs (en particulier celui de Priène) et avec une vision épicurienne de la vie. Le grand péristyle qui entourait un long bassin, évoquerait ainsi le gymnase grec. La statue monumentale d'Athéna permettait, selon Gilles Sauron, de s'imaginer à Athènes, dans le Jardin d’Épicure.
