| Description |
English: The Frontier House, 460 Center Street, Lewiston, New York, July 2020. A Federal-style building erected in 1824 using limestone imported from the Bay of Quinte in Ontario and owned originally by Samuel Barton, the Frontier House was for many years as a hotel, once said to be the finest in the United States west of Albany, with a guest list that reads like a Who's Who of the 19th century: authors Mark Twain, Washington Irving, and Charles Dickens, Senators Henry Clay and Daniel Webster, U.S. President William McKinley, New York Governor DeWitt Clinton, French Emperor Napoleon III, prizefighter John L. Sullivan, and opera singer Jenny Lind are only a few. Later in its history, in the 1980s and '90s, it was operated as a McDonald's restaurant. It's now vacant, but was purchased in 2019 by a local development company and is being restored. |
