"Let it go! Let it go!" - Elsa, from the movie 'Frozen'

This week the world is watching athletes doing amazing feats on ice in the Winter Olympics. Yet ice also plays a beautiful role at Great Sand Dunes. The mountains above the dunes were carved by glacial ice, and each winter, snow and ice gather, waiting to be released in springtime.

In this recent photo, nearby Zapata Falls are frozen into a dramatic, glassy sculpture inside a deep crevasse. The ice and snow on the Sangre de Cristo Mountains will soon 'let go' of their grip and begin to flow as fresh water into the valley, moving sand and bringing life to plants and animals.
