English: Full ahead...Aye aye captain Full ahead...Aye, Aye captain!
The olden day throttle of the RSS Discovery. This device is neither steam-by-wire nor indeed even mechanically connected to the engine. It is an annunciator device, a visual and audible communicator with which the captain would tell the chief down below whether to go forward or backwards and at what speed. The chief would see the instructions identically on his telegraph downstairs. Reciprocal information could be passed back in reply to confirm the order. Sometimes called a Chadburn as it's now commonly applied generically to any such device, no matter the manufacturer. The original Chadburn, in the same way as Hoover for vacuum cleaners, became the standard for these pieces of ships' bridge equipment. http://www.chadburntelegraphs.com/ Not featured on the RSS Discovery's EOT is an "Engine buggrd, Sir!" message (or similar) as was featured on some devices. https://www.flickr.com/photos/reivax/288216984/ or a "Finished with engines" command http://www.wreckhunter.net/images/IMG_0585085.jpg |
