Summary edit

Description Introduced, cool season, annual herb. Mature plant is semi-erect to sprawling with a climbing habit. Cotyledons are spear shaped and hairless. Leaves are 2-3-times divided, variously pinnatisect and flat. Flowerheads are racemes with less than 15 pink-red flowers that have a blackish red tip. Sepals are 2 and small. The 4 petals are in 2 dissimilar pairs; the outer pair form a pouch at the apex. Widespread weed of wasteland, cultivated areasand sparse pastures. Prefers (but not limited to) medium to heavy textured soils. Appears to readily grazed. Herbicides are registered for its control. Cultural options include cultivation to stimulate emergence (followed by a knockdown spray), break crops (cereals) and use of herbicide tolerant crops.
