El dibujo representa el fusilamiento del general Torrijos y sus compañeros en las playas de Málaga. El general José María de Torrijos y Uriarte (1791-1831) que llegó a ser capitán general de Valencia, mariscal de campo y ministro de la Guerra durante el Trienio Liberal (1820-1823). Tras la vuelta al absolutismo, se sublevó y fue víctima de una emboscada preparada por el gobernador de Málaga, Vicente González Moreno, quien le había asegurado el triunfo de la rebelión. El día 11 de diciembre de 1831, a las once y media de la mañana, y sin juicio previo, el general Torrijos y 48 de sus compañeros fueron fusilados en las playas de Málaga. Está considerada una obra maestra de la pintura histórica del siglo XIX español y fue encargada en 1886 directamente por el Gobierno liberal de Práxedes Mateo Sagasta (1825-1903), durante la regencia de la reina María Cristina de Austria, como ejemplo de la defensa de las libertades para las futuras generaciones.
