Typed letter, black text on white paper.

Gettysburg National Military Park Gettysburg, Pennsylvania D66 August 7, 1961 Mr. Payne Williams WIS-TV Columbia, South Carolina Dear Mr. Williams: It is understood that your committee has selected a site for the South Carolina memorial along West Confederate Avenue near the Kershaw Brigade marker. Dr. Tilberg, Historian, has informed me that you had inquired as to the possible purchase price of the Rose Garden tract of land, which extends from West Confederate Avenue eastward to U.S. Route #15. This tract contains approximately 19 acres, 21 perch, and is improved with a dwelling house and a number of somewhat outdated tourist cabins. Our estimate of the value of the entire tract would be near $70,000. Today we inquired of the owner, Mr. Melvin Sargeant, whether he would sell a small portion of his land lying east of West Confederate Avenue and near the Kershaw Brigade marker. Mr. Sargeant said that he was not interested is selling a small portion of his property. If there is any further information that we can furnish which will facilitate your plans, please do not hesitate to call upon us. Sincerely your, James B. Myers Superintendent SGSollenberger/bmd
