English: The NOAA/NASA Suomi-NPP satellite captured a couple interesting features in the wake of a massive winter storm that moved across the Midwest and Northeast from January 1-3, 2014. This particular image was from January 3. Using its VIIRS instrument, the satellite caught the large, white expanse of heavy snowfall covering the region. Snowfall totals approaching a foot were widespread, with nearly two feet of snow across parts of coastal New England. Behind the storm system, frigid Arctic air moved into the eastern two-thirds of the U.S., breaking daily temperature records. This very cold air passing over the relatively warmer Great Lakes and Atlantic Ocean produced the second notable feature--dense parallel rows of cumulus clouds, called cloud streets, which cover much of the water bodies in this image.
