English: Gabbroic anorthosite to anorthositic gabbro in the Precambrian of Minnesota, USA.
This is part of the widespread Duluth Complex, a ~1.1 billion year old suite of igneous rocks in northeastern Minnesota that is associated with volcanism in the Lake Superior segment of the ancient Mid-Continent Rift System. These grayish-colored rocks are gabbroic anorthosite to anorthositic gabbro, which are mafic, phaneritic (coarsely-crystalline), intrusive igneous rocks dominated calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar - CaAl2Si2O8 - calcium aluminosilicate. The light gray-colored crystals are the plagioclase - their composition (An70) is on the border between labradorite plagioclase and bytownite plagioclase. The dark-colored material between the plagioclase crystals is principally a mix of olivine and augite pyroxene. Gabbroic anorthosite is slightly more plagioclase rich than anorthositic gabbro. Geologic unit & age: anorthosite series, Duluth Complex, late Mesoproterozoic, 1099 Ma Locality: Merritt Creek West outcrop - roadcut along the northern & northwestern side of Skyline Parkway, Duluth, northeastern Minnesota, USA (46° 45’ 41.23” North, 92° 09’ 38.58” West) |
