Description
English: Galpo Hekim Saheb a Bengali natak by Kolkata based group, Sundaram.
Synopsis
Bengal one hundred and fifty years ago. Ordinary lives are at the mercy of Zamindars, Talukdars, Tahasildars and all those dictated by the British Raj’s Permanent Settlement. Two such Talukdars are at the crux of Galpo Hekim Saheb- Khan Bahadur Wali Khan of Dariyaganj and Pashupati Poddar of Palashpur. Locked horns in their lust for wealth and power they heap hardships on their subjects. If one snatches a courtesan to snub his rival, another conspires to persuade a hekim to switch sides.
The Hekim of Dariyaganj is much valued by the Talukdars because his medicines keep the impoverished villagers alive thus ensuring a steady flow of revenue. The Hekim however lives in a worn shack and travels across villages on a three-legged ass. Talented, honest, dedicated and righteous, he is a misfit, and just as endangered are his dreams of inventing a cure for the most dreaded disease.
All that the Hekim needs for this invention are red roses. Roses bloom by thousands in the gardens of both Talukdars. But will they let him use them? Then disease strikes, the very disease Hekim’s invention can stop…
