Deutsch: Kunst aus Gandhara; Gandhara wurde früher eine im heutigen Nordpakistan direkt ander Seidenstraße gelegene Region genannt; dort hatte Alexander der Große während seiner eroberungszüge die ersten Kontakte der altinidschen und iranischen Kultur mit der römischen und griechischen Kultur bewirkt. Die im 2. bis 4. Jh. n. Chr. maßgebliche Kunstrichtung verband sich mit der dort geförderten Lehre der Buddhismus. Es entstaden buddhistische Bildwerke, vor allem Friese und Skulpturen, hergestellt aus dem vor Ort gewonnenen grauen oder grünlich-grauen Schiefer. Erstmalig wurde Buddha bildlich dargestellt. Die gesamte Region wurde im 5. Jh. von erobernden Völkern verwüstet. Buddhismus und Gandhara-Kunst haben sich über missionierende Mönche und Kaufleute bis nach Ostasien ausgebreitet; im Überseemuseum
