Description
English: Garnetiferous metanorthosite from the Precambrian of New York State, USA. (~9.9 cm across at its widest)

Anorthosite is a coarsely-crystalline, intrusive igneous rock dominated by plagioclase feldspar - typically labradorite. A major occurrence of this uncommon rock is in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. In this area, the rocks have been regionally metamorphosed, but the overall mineralogy is the same. The dark bluish-gray crystals are plagioclase phenocrysts. The slightly greenish, light-colored areas are finely-crystalline groundmass, also composed of plagioclase. The slight greenish coloration is from the presence of a metamorphic mineral(s). The small deep red masses are garnets.

Geologic unit: Marcy Anorthosite, late Mesoproterozoic, 1155 Ma

Locality: small roadcut on the northeastern side of Rt. 73 next to Chapel Pond, southeast of the town of Saint Huberts, eastern Adirondack Mountains, northeastern New York State, USA (44° 08' 27.23" North latitude, 74° 44' 49.05" West longitude)
