Summary edit

Description
English: Gateway to Great Saxham Hall On top of the gatepost is a wooden representation of a nutmeg; this alludes to an earlier hall on this site which was known as 'Nutmeg Hall'. It belonged to John Eldred, a 16th century traveller and explorer, who sailed to the Middle East in 1583, returning five years later with a cargo of nutmeg, which he introduced to the UK. The original hall burnt down in 1779 and the present hall was constructed on an adjacent site in the 1790s.
