With its altitude of 2637 meters, Smolikas is the second highest mountain in Greece after Olympus, and top of the Pindos mountain range. Whereas Olympus is a remote mountain, limited to its highest summits, Pindos is a mountain range wich extends throughout Greece, from the albanian boarder to the canal of Corinthos. This is a rather wet area compared with Olympus, with a lot of storms in wintertime that let the mountains covered with meters of snow and huge cornices in spring. Skihiking can be considered from the first significant snowfalls (December to January) to April-early May, depending on the year. In late May 2006 it was still possible to ski from 1800 meters on north sloped and 2000 meters on south slopes... Thus this area includes big forests, still wild, one of the few areas in Europe where you can still find a rich wildlife, with even some bears close to Smolikas.
