Summary edit
DescriptionGede Ruin.jpg |
English: Gede ruin located at the coast of Kenya in Malindi County. It was occupied by Muslims who preferred to use the local coral rock to build their Mosques and tombs. The style of architecture which they developed lasted for at least 300 years, whoever they may have been, their lives were dominated by their religion and at most of the 50 or 60 mosque and tomb sites known on the coast and on the Islands there is no trace of the private houses which they must have lived in. it was a striking characteristic of all these houses that they had very narrow rooms, and this was because they had very narrow rooms, and this was because they only had timber of limited length and carrying capacity on which to support the heavy flat masonry roofs. the typical house plan consisted of open courtyard which led into a series of narrow modules, an outer room, an inner room which was rather more private and at the back of the house a third room which was divided into three small compartments, perhaps two sleeping rooms with a store between them. |
