Text Appearing Before Image:
drove Reno in disorder to the bluffsa half hour before. Then again they heard two distinctvolleys in rapid succession. What did those volleys mean? They meant that Custer was in deadly peril — a signal tothe soldiers he had so often led to victory to hastenwithout delay to his support. Custers last desperate appeal reached the ears of the fiveor six hundred soldiers above, but no response came. Alas, the opportune time soon passed, for in less than one hourthe Indians, flushed with their bloody victory, were hasten-ing to drive them from their position ob the bluffs. Had the officer superior in command rallied the entireforces to his support, at the sound of the first shot fromCusters field, he would have won and deserved immortalhonors. Strange as it appears, they seemed to feel no appre-hension that Custer was in any real danger, believing thathe was perfectly able to take care of himself, but how theycould think so in view of Renos disaster a short time beforeis somewhat puzzling.
Text Appearing After Image:
GKNHkAL Custers last chai:ge. LAST HUNTING GROUND OF THE DAKOTAHS. 213 It is believed, upon the very unsatisfactory informationdrawn from Indians who took part in the battle, that theammunition of some of Casters troops became exhausted, that two of his troops had dismounted to do battle on foot, and that their horses, made frantic by the waving ofblankets and the yelling of the Indians, had been stampeded, bearing away with them the reserve ammunition in the saddle-bags. It will be understood that when Benteen jomed Kenoon the bluffs, he was on his way with the pack train tojoin Custer, in obedience to an urgent order — Custerslast order-which read as follows: Benteen, comequick! Big Village ; Bring packs. Cook, Adjutant. P. S.Brintr packs. This order would indicate, that from somefavorable point he had discovered the full strength ofthe Indian village, and realizing that the situation wasdesperate, had sent for reinforcements, and more am-munition. About the time that Reno was moving
