General John Henry Hammond served as acting chief of staff and chief adjutant under General Sherman. He was appointed Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Dakotas. After negotiating Sitting Bull's surrender, General Hammond went on to create the Land and River Improvement Corp, a NJ-based company, which together with other investing partners developed and founded the City of Superior, Wisconsin.
