English: The postal history of Karnataka had interesting anectodes. An efficient postal system 'Mysuru Anche' was established by Maharaja Chikka Devaraja Wodeyar in 1672. The Mysore Kingdom came directly under the control of the British in 1831, and Bengaluru became the Capital of the princely state. The 'Mysuru Anche' was merged with the British postal system in 1889. The Public Offices Building 'Attara Kacheri' housed the 'Mysuru Anche' till India became independent and also need was felt for new building to serve as General Post Office at Bengaluru after India's Independence and reorganisation of Indian states in 1956. The 'Magnificient Vidhana Soudha ' was commissioned in the year 1956. The new GPO was constructed and it was inaugurated on 15th November,1985 by Shri. Rajiv Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India then in the presence Shri Ramakrishna Hegde, the Chief Minister of Karnataka then. The Bengaluru GPO is amidst the important landmarks of Bengaluru like 'Cubbon Park', 'Goverment Museum of Karnataka' and 'Visveswarya Science and Technological Museum' to mentiona few.. |
