You see a lot of this in NW Iowa. Farmers today make a bunch of money. My Grandparents, back in the 50s - 60s had some money, but nothing like the wealth of this family as the house would indicate. This farms are usually owned by the 4th or 5th generation of the original homesteaders. They keep the barns and other utilitarian buildings, but tear down the old house and build a nicer one.

My friend Donnie lives near here and has done the same thing. His wife wanted to move into town, and he didn't. So the deal he made with her was to rebuild their house into one as nice or nicer than any in town.
