Title
Nouvelle Carte des Environs de Paris en Relief, avec les Fortifications. Par Brevet D'Invention Paris. Geomontographie Bauerkeller.
Description
English: An old map of Paris, France. Date estimated. Bauerkeller embossed this map to give a 3D effect for the buildings and some elevated features (city walls, etc.). This feature seems to be unique to Bauerkeller's maps, although he was copied in one map in our collection, the map of Cassel by Caesar (see our 12215.000). Bauerkeller also used very bright (and to our eyes very modern) printed colors to show the different districts and areas. Date estimated. Embossed chromolithograph plan printed in color. Little is known about the Bauerkeller cartographic publishing firm. Headed by Georg Bauerkeller, they were apparently based in Darmstadt, Germany, just south of Frankfurt, but also maintained an office in Paris. They were active for about 30 years from the 1830s through the 1860s, and produced maps, plans, and small atlases. They are best known for the maps they produced using the 'geomontographie' - the process employed in the production of the present map.
