Description
English: Placed in the center island of the bus loop to the rear of the NFTA Metro Rail's Utica station in Buffalo, New York, this unnamed stainless-steel sculpture by George Smith was commissioned in 1979 by the organization's Art Selection Committee - a consortium of transit commissioners and local art experts whose charge was to take advantage of the opportunity presented by construction of the light rail line to promote the appreciation of public art - and unveiled in 1985. Born in Buffalo, living at the time in Brooklyn, and today based in Houston, Smith's inspiration for this soaring band of painted steel was Lebe, a serpent-deity worshiped by the Dogon people of West Africa. Twisting across the mound at the center of the loop, the parabola constantly changes shape as viewers pass by it. As seen in March 2022.
