Description
English: Pewter d. = 41 mm.

The Siege of Strasbourg took place during the Franco-Prussian War, and resulted in the French surrender of the fortified city to the combined German forces from Baden and from Württemberg on 28 September 1870.

On French arms standing Germania l. holding sword, the double headed Imperial Eagle on a shield at r. In the background a view of Strasbourg. Curved above: "FÜR FREIHEIT RECHT UND DEUTSCHE EHRE"/ 5 shields of Prussia, Bavaria, Baden, Saxony, and Württemberg around "1870". On a scroll connecting the shields: "WIR WOLLEN SEIN EIN EINIG VOLK VON BRÜDERN" (see Schiller- William Tell, Rütlischwur, a legendary oath of the Old Swiss Confederacy). Slg. Marienburg 5773.
