Summary edit

Description
English: German Third Reich police caps:

1. Schutzpolizei der Gendarmerie Tschako / Schutzpolizei Tschako, the characteristic shako ("bump hat") of the Schutzpolizei (Protection Police) of Nazi Germany.

2. Schutzpolizei Einheitsmütze, German Third Reich municipal police visor cap with piping in orange Waffenfarbe meaning Gendarmerie.

  • Schirmmütze, peaked cap/visor cap, with national cockade (Kokarde), police eagle (Polizeiadler) insignia and officer's chin-strap cords
  • The cockade (Kokarde), in black, white and red, representing the traditional national colours of Germany, was worn on every German Police cap. When worn on the shako as a Tschako-Nationale, it was oblong (oval) in shape and framed with a silver cord. On the peaked cap (Schirmmütze) and on the side cap (Hausmütze) it was round and without a corded edge.
  • The basic design of the Hoheitsabzeichen (National emblem) of Nazi Germany was a spread imperial eagle (Reichsadler) over a swastika (Hakenkreuz). The police version was a swastika eagle enclosed in a wreath of oak leaves. This wreathed Polizeiadler ("police eagle") was worn as a cap badge and on the left sleeve by all uniformed police.

The shako and peaked cap have both a wreathed Police eagle and swastika emblem and a national tri-color cockade (please see visor cap badge guide). Gendarmerie were state rural police and part of the Ordnungspolizei (Orpo), the "regular police" in the Third Reich.

Photo taken on 8 May 2019 at Lofoten War Memorial Museum (Lofoten Krigsminnemuseum) in Svolvær, Norway. The museum exhibits uniforms, smaller items, etc. from World War II and the German occupation of Norway 1940–1945.
