DescriptionGerman tram at Whitwell & Reepham railway station (geograph 3154365).jpg |
English: German tram at Whitwell & Reepham railway station.
This tram comes from the German city of Frankfurt am Main, where it was in service in the 1980s. The story as to how it ended up on a railway station in Norfolk has as yet to be told. In 1882 two railway stations opened at Reepham and Whitwell - Whitwell station, having formed part of the Norwich City to Melton Constable leg of the M&GN which ran for a total of 21.5 miles, was closed in 1959. After years of lying derelict it was acquired by the newly formed Whitwell & Reepham Railway Preservation Society Limited with the aim of restoring the station, acquiring rolling stock and to set up a museum. By September 2008 130 metres of track had been laid and with work still ongoing, the station was re-opened to the public in February 2009 on occasion of the 50th anniversary of the closure of the M&GN (Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway). From end of March onwards weekends the station is open from 10am to 6pm - with steam engine 'Annie' running every first Sunday from midday onwards. |
