PLEASE, NO invitations or self promotions, THEY WILL BE DELETED. My photos are FREE to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know, thanks. Statues in the church are, left to right: Lukas, Marmor, ca. 1887, Matthaus, Marmor, ca. 1880, Jesus Christus, Marmor, ca. 1880, Markus, Marmor, ca. 1880, Johannes and Marmor, ca. 1887 All from Prof. Gustav Kaupert, Frankfurt During the Middle Ages, it was used as the residence for the bishop of Trier. in the 19th century, Frederick William IV of Prussia ordered the building to be restored to its original Roman state. In 1856, the Aula Palatina became a Protestant church. In 1944, the building burned due to an air raid of the allied forces during World War II. When it was repaired after the war, the historical inner decorations from the 19th century were not reconstructed, The Basilica of Constantine or Aula Palatina is part of a Roman palace complex that was built by the emperor Constantine (306–337 AD) around 310 AD. The Basilica, Constantine's throne room, is the largest surviving single-room structure from Roman times. The Romans wanted the architecture to express the magnificence and might of the emperor. Unbelievable size: 26.05 m (85.5 ft) wide, 33 m (108 ft) high, and 67 m (220 ft) long. This depth is magnified by an optical illusion - both the windows of the apse as well as the niches underneath become progressively smaller towards the middle, thus enhancing the impression of length. |
