Der Weise ist nach ihm sich selbst genug, von allem unabhängig, gleichgültig gegen Ehe, Familie und staatliches Ge- meiuleben, (dies letztere ein ganz unantiker Zug,) wie gegen Reichtum, Ehre und Genuß. Was uns an dieser Selbstgenügsamkeit und Bedürfnislosigkeit hindert, z. B. die Lust, ist ein Übel, was uns darin fördert, wie Anstrengung und Unlust, ist ein Gut; alles übrige ist ein Adiaphoron. In diesem mehr negativen als positiven Ideale des Antisthenes vermissen wir ganz die schöne Humanität und allseitige Empfänglichkeit des Meisters; noch mehr vermissen wir darin eüre Ausbildung der fruchtbaren dialektischen Elemente, welche das sokratische Philosophieren enthielt.
In entschiedenere Geringschätzung alles Wissens, in noch größere Verachtung aller öffentlich geltenden Sitte ging der spätere CynismuS über, ein manchmal widerwärtiges und schamloses Zerrbild des sokratischen Geistes. So namentlich jener Schüler des Antisthenes, der allein bei ihm blieb, während der Meister die übrigen sortjagte, Diogenes von Si- nope. Zeller charakterisiert denselben treffend als einen geistreichen Sonderling, welchen seine unzerstörbare Originalität, sein derber Humor, seine auch in der Übertreibung noch bewundernswerte Charakterstärke, seine frische, gesunde Natur, zur volkstümlichsten Figur des griechischen Altertums gemacht hat.
In der Hochstellung der Tugend und Philosophie bewahrten diese Cyniker, die man treffend die Kapuziner der griechischen Welt genannt hat, eine Erinnerung der ursprünglichen Sokratik; „Vernunft müsse man haben, oder einen Strick", pflegte Diogenes zu sagen. Aber sie suchten die Tugend „auf dem kürzesten Wege", im naturgemäßen Leben, (?o TH-, d. h. in der Zurückziehung
auf sich selbst, in der Erlangung völliger Unabhängigkeit und Bedürfnislosigkeit, in der Berzichtung auf Kunst und Wissenschaft, wie überhaupt auf alle bestimmten Zwecke. Der Weise, sagten sie, sei aller Bedürfnisse und Begierden mächtig, ohne
