praktische imd>theoretische Wissenschaft, bald spricht er von drei Teilen, Ethik, Physik und Logik; die theoretische Philosophie selbst hinwiederum teilt er bald in Physik und Logik, bald in Theologie, Mathematik und Physik. Keine dieser Einteilungen hat er aber der Darstellung seines Systems ausdrücklich zu Grund gelegt; er legt überhaupt keinen Wert darauf, spricht sogar seinen Widerwillen gegen die Methode der Einteilungen offen aus und es geschieht nur aus Rücksichten der Zweckmäßigkeit» wenn wir der platonischen Dreiteilung den Vorzug geben. 3. Logik und Metaphysik, a. Begriff und Verhältnis beider. Der Name „Metaphysik" (so genannt, weil die betreffenden Schriften in der Sammlung der aristotelischen Werke hinter den physikalischen /tL?« -r« stehen,) ist erst von den aristotelischen Kommentatoren geschaffen worden; Plato hat sie „Dialektik" genannt und Aristoteles hat dafür die Bezeichnung „erste Philosophie" (Tr^wvr/ wogegen ihm die Physik „zweite Philosophie" §c>.) ist. Das Verhältnis dieser ersten Philosophie zu den andern Wissenschaften bestimmt Aristoteles folgendermaßen. Wissen heißt, die Ursache und den Grund eines Gegenstandes erkannt haben, ^ eMr-«,, Daher wird auch der Theoretiker, der das Warum ('ro oder den Grund a^/«^) weiß, für einsichtiger und weiser gehalten, als der Empiriker, der nur das daß (?o o-r-) weiß. Hieraus folgt, daß die oder die Wissenschaft ein Wissen der Gründe und Ursachen ist. Nun giebt es aber mehrere Wissenschaften; unter ihnen wird diejenige den ersten Rang einnehmen, welche die obersten und letzten Gründe und Ursachen untersucht (H schaff nennt Aristoteles, weil sie Wissenschaft der ersten Prinzipien ist, erste d. h. Fundamentalphilosophie. Oder mit andern Worten: Jede Wissenschaft, sagt er, nimmt ein bestimmtes
