sätze, an denen sich die bisherige Philosophie abgerungen hatte, Subjekt und Objekt, Geist und Materie, auf einen letzten Grund zurückzuführen, hatte ohne befriedigenden Erfolg geendet. Der vergeblichen Vermittlungsversuche müde, bricht jetzt das Subjekt mit der objektiven Welt. Es zieht sich auf sich selbst, in sein Selbstbewußtsein zurück, entweder als moralisches Subjekt in die Selbstgenügsamkeit des Weisen, dem jedes äußere Gut, ja die objektive Welt, etwas Gleichgültiges und nur das Handeln selbst, die sittliche Thätigkeit als solche ein Gut ist (Stoicismus); oder als sich selbst genießendes Subjekt in das innere Lustgefühl und die selbst- besriedigte Ruhe eines gebildeten maßvollen Gemüts, das die Gegenwart und Vergangenheit genießt, die Zukunft nicht fürchtet, und in der objekiven Welt nur ein Mittel der Selbstbejahung sieht (Epikuräismus); oder als zweifelndes, alle objektive Wahrheit und Wissenschaft verwerfendes Subjekt in die Apathie und Gemütsunerschütterlichkeit des Skeptikers, der mit der objektiven Welt theoretisch und praktisch gebrochen hat (Skepticismus). Denselben CharaKer der Subjekivität trägt aber auch das letzte der antiken philosophischen Systeme, der NeuplatoniS- mus, denn auch hier bildet die Erhebung des Subjekts zum Absoluten den Angelpunkt des Systems, und wenn der Neuplatonismus andererseits auch gegenständlich über Gott und sein Verhältnis zum Endlichen spekuliert, so hat doch auch diese Spekulation ihr Motiv in dem Interesse, den stufenweisen Übergang vom absoluten Objekt zur menschlichen Persönlichkeit nachzuweisen. Das beherrschende Prinzip ist daher auch hier das Interesse der Subjekivität und der größere Reichtum objektiver Bestimmungen hat selbst seinen Gmnd nur darin, daß sich die Subjekivität zur Absolutheit erweitert hat.
