John Giffard was the eldest son and heir of Arthur Giffard (1580–1616) by his wife Agnes Leigh (died 1625), a daughter of Thomas Leigh of Burrough (anciently "Borow", "Borough", etc.) in the parish of Northam, near Bideford. Atop the helm is the crest of Giffard: A cock's head erased in its beak an ear of wheat. The motto in French Pul/i Que Fort, the second two words of which (taken together) appear to be a play on the surname "Gifford" ("Quefort"), the first two taken together possibly being "puisque" (a conjunctive "as, since, seeing that, since" or a word denoting intensification), thus perhaps signifying "Really Strong", a martial-like motto. "Plus que fort" would siginify "more than strong". Contrast motto of Fortescue family, another prominent Devon family, which also plays on the surname: "Forte Scutum Salus Ducum" ("A Strong Shield is the Salvation of Leaders")
