Summary edit

Description
English: Giuseppe Calì, Portrait of Sir Adrian Dingli

President of the Court of Appeal (1880-1894)
Oil on canvas, 125x99cm
Malta Chamber of Commerce, 1st floor landing

"This portrait was commissioned by the Chamber of Commerce in 1896, two years after Sir Adrian had retired from a long legal career. Between 1854 and 1880 he had occupied the Office of Crown Advocate. His was by all accounts an illustrious career which was given due recognition when he was created C.B. in 1859 and G.C.M.G. in 1860.

The features are superbly rendered by Call's brush, but what mostly remains in one's memory of this portrait of legalistic sagacity is the impressive display of decorations, so meticulously painted as to be almost considered as real miniatures, though within this particular context blown up to the level of sheer pomposity." - Emmanuel Fiorentino
