Gjennom Stortingets "Lov om abnorme børns undervisning" den 8 juni 1881 ble det innført skoleplikt for alle blinde barn i alderen 9 - 21 år. Med statsstøtte i ryggen kunne lærer Gabriel Stabell ved Katedralskolen kjøpe gården Gløshaugen Vestre i 1885, og privatskolens virksomhet startet opp på nyåret 1886. Gabriel styrte skolen inntil 1893, da blindeskolen flyttet til Klæbu. Bygget er fortsatt i bruk og i god stand, og benyttes i dag av Internasjonal Seksjon ved NTNU.
