DescriptionGladstoneandRosebery.gif |
English: Photograph taken at Dalmeny House of a house party in 1879. Included in the photograph are William Ewart Gladstone and his wife and daughter Mary Gladstone, and the Earl and Countess of Rosebery. Also pictured is the Countess's cousin Ferdinand James von Rothschild. This photograph is 128 years old, thus in public domain by virtue of age.
This photograph was taken by an unknown photographer in 1879. It is possible that the photograper was working for a local news agency, a political party or one of the sitters. However, nothing is known for sure. It was common to record house parties in this way at the time. This particular image is a scan of an original copy mounted on cardboard. Several copies were made and given to the sitters as mementos of the occasion. One copy is known to be in the ownership of the present Earl and Countess of Rosebery of Dalmeny House, Scotland. The particular copy scanned has come by descent to the uploader. Versions of the photograph, and some very similar to it have been published in various biographies of the 5th Earl of Rosebery. |
