Description
English: Glauconitic flat-pebble conglomerate from the Cambrian of Wyoming, USA. (field of view ~9.6 centimeters across)

Flat-pebble conglomerate is a scarce lithology. Anomalously, it is relatively common in the Cambrian and Lower Ordovician. The dark green coatings on the clasts in this samples are composed of glauconite, "the rarest common mineral". Glauconite is a silicate mineral with the formula (K,Na,Ca)0.5-1(Fe+3,Al,Fe+2,Mg)2(Si,Al)4O10(OH)2·nH2O. It seems to usually form by chemical alteration of biotite mica in shallow water under reducing conditions.

Stratigraphy: Gros Ventre Formation, Middle or Upper Cambrian

Geologic context: part of an overturned Paleozoic cover slip in the Clear Creek Thrust Zone

Locality: outcrop along Route 16, ~7 to 7.5 miles west of the town of Buffalo, eastern Bighorn Mountains, northern Wyoming, USA
