Description

Gleditsia triacanthos Linnaeus, 1753 - honey locust in Ohio, USA.

Honey locusts are native to much of the American Midwest, in the general areas of the Mississippi River Valley and Ohio River Valley. These trees are remarkable for having dense clusters of long, sharp spines emerging from the upper trunk. Solitary spines are also present along small branches. Such spines seem like overkill, in terms of protection from herbivores present in modern America. Honey locust spines probably evolved in response to Pleistocene Ice Age megaherbivores (= large plant eating animals), now extinct.

Classification: Plantae, Angiospermophyta, Fabales, Fabaceae

Locality: southern side of Wright Run Creek, Ferris-Wright Park, Dublin, northwestern Franklin County, Ohio, USA (vicinity of 40° 06’ 41.73” North latitude, 83° 06’ 22.96” West longitude)
