Description

Glass by Christopher Whall from 1902, made by Lowndes & Drury. At the top of the window Uriel, Angel of the sun is shown with the rays of light spreading out. The top layer of figures represent Power and Music and an Angel bearing a scroll "Coeli enarrant"(The Heavens declare). On the right Earth and Fire are depicted. In the next row we see St Vincent, Saint Alban in armour, the salutation of Elizabeth and Mary, St George with the Dragon, and Saint Laurence with the gridiron. The next tier down shows five Saints of the Midlands and the South: Saint Etheldreda, Saint Swithin, Saint Edward, Saint Oswald, and Fredeswide, Patroness of Oxford.

At the bottom of the window are scenes relating to the figures above: The ash tree of Saint Etheldreda, Saint Swithin and the bridge at Winchester, Edward looking at the Treasury of the Danegeld (this is obscured by part of a monument below), the death of Oswald in battle, and Fredeswide fleeing and hiding in a pigsty.
