Summary edit

Description

Gneiss in the Precambrian of Ontario, Canada.

Gneiss is a high-grade, foliated metamorphic rock. It forms principally by metamorphism of schist, granite, or granite-like rocks. The foliation in gneiss is obvious and consists of alternating bands of light and dark minerals.

The Precambrian-aged gneiss in this Ontario outcrop is associated with rocks of the Cartier Granite (Neoarchean) and the Sudbury Breccia (Paleoproterozoic)

Geologic unit: probably the Levack Gneiss Complex, Neoarchean, ~2.64 to 2.70 Ga

Locality: Windy Lake Northwest outcrop - roadcut on the western side of Route 144, northwest of the “town” of Windy Lake, Sudbury Impact Structure, Ontario, southeastern Canada (46° 39’ 46.91" North latitude, 81° 31’ 21.22" West longitude)
