Description

Gneiss in the Precambrian of New York State, USA.

Gneiss is a relatively common, foliated-textured, high-grade metamorphic rock. It consists of alternating bands of light and dark minerals. The precursors to gneiss are generally schist, granite, or granite-like rocks.

The outcrop shown here is a glaciated knob of Proterozoic-aged gneiss in Port Leyden, New York. According to Darling & Florence (1995), the gneisses of this area vary considerably in mineral content. Glacial erosion of the region occurred during the Pleistocene Ice Age.

Locality: southern side of North Street, eastern side of the town of Port Leyden, just west of the Black River, western Adirondacks, southern Lewis County, north-central New York State, USA (~43° 35’ 07.32” North latitude, ~75° 20’ 30.48” West longitude)
