Text Appearing Before Image:
ience ? * Has any human being kept Gods law ? * Mat.3:17. Has any of the race except Jesus ?* Ps. 14: 2, 3. What-can we say for ourselves ? In view of the universality of sin, how doesman appear in claiming never to have done any-thing worthy of Gods condemnation ? * MAN IN GODS IMAGE. LESSON LXXVI In the imaee of God created he him.—Gen. 1: 2 1. The belief has been entertained that Godpossesses a form, the image of which is seen inthe form of man. God is a spirit. A spiritcontrasts with form. Christ replied to theaffrighted beholders A spirit hath not flesh andbones as ye see me have. 2. The term image here must refer to mansspirit. It will be our purpose to enquire whetherit refers to the moral character, or to the spirit,as a created, identity. 3. The belief more common is, that the imageof God here is that of his holiness. Moral char-acter is not a creatable* object. It is the resultof free action. Gods image, in the sense ofcharacter, could not be produced by an act ofcreation.
Text Appearing After Image:
TIDAL WAVE REACHING THE ARK.—Gen. 7: 11. 406 MAN IN GOD S IMAGE. 415 4. Hence, the idea of character must beexcluded from a merely created intelligence, untilacting for himself. 5. There are certain attributes of God, usuallycalled natural, which are susceptible of being-imaged in creation. Among these was the attri-bute of immortality. Clearly God :s able tomake a being indestructablf. But he is not ableto make a being destructable and inclestructableat the same time. If therefore the image of Godhere includes his immortality, God himself can-not annihilate him It is no irreve: ence to s vythat God cannot do a false, or an absud thing. 6. Moseslanguage makes it the more evidentthat immortality was meant. God breathedinto his nostrils the bieath of life, and man be-came a living soul, i. e.; an immortal existence. The terms of life and deat
