Das Foto wurde mit Graufiltern zur Langzeitbelichtung aus insgesamt vier Einzelbildern zusammengestitcht.

"Wasserfall der Götter" ist die deutsche Übersetzung des Isländischen Namens. Die Namensgebung rührt vom Goden Þorgeir her, der hier im Jahre 1000 n. Chr. seinen heidnischen Göttern abschwor und deren Symbole hier in den Wasserfall warf, um dem Christentum beizutreten. Zunächst vermittelte Þorgeir zwischen Christen und Nichtchristen, bis er später in der Versammlung des Althing, zur Einheit aller Isländer und dem Christentum als allgemeine Glaubensrichtung aufrief.

Der Wasserfall, der in 30 Meter Breite, zweigeteilt aus 12 Meter Höhe stürzt, gehört zum Skjálfandafljót.
