Description

NPS/Patrick Myers

Some gold sand was discovered in the dunes in the 1920s, creating a little gold rush. Now there is an annual "gold rush" to enjoy the aspen color at national parks throughout the Rocky Mountains! Late September through early October is generally the peak aspen color at Great Sand Dunes; cottonwoods peak with a deeper gold color around mid-October.
