Summary edit

Description
English: The Gold Star Mothers War Memorial at Lincoln Park in Olean, New York, as seen in July 2021. The south side of East State Street between Union and Barry Streets has been occupied by a park dating back to the earliest history of Olean: it appeared as such in the original plot of the city laid out by Major Adam Hoops in 1808. In 1909, at the city's centennial, members of the local chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic petitioned the city's Common Council to rename the park in honor of former president Abraham Lincoln, and additionally asked for erection of a memorial to local area soldiers. That monument, the G.A.R. Memorial, was finally dedicated in 1938, and it was joined twelve years later by this monument to local World War II veterans that was placed by the American Gold Star Mothers association, comprising the parents of U.S. war casualties. A tall granite pillar topped by a carved globe erected "in gratitude to those who bravely gave their loved ones in this cause", the monument is carved with the famous "swords into ploughshares and spears into pruining hooks" passage from the Book of Isaiah as well as exhortations to the visitor to "hold in honored memory those men and women who served their country", to "live for those who have fallen that in our lives they may be resurrected", and to "be inspired to help preserve the peace and keep forever living the freedom for which they died". The monument is surrounded by landscaping in the shape of a five-pointed star as well as a quartet of stone benches meant to represent the Four Freedoms outlined by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want, and freedom from fear.
