Description
English: Golden Gate Bridge tower and walkway.
Français : Le plus célèbre des ponts suspendus fut conçu et réalisé en moins de cinq ans. Il fut mis en service en 1937. Long de 2.740 m (1.280 m pour sa partie suspendue), il enjambe la baie pour relier San Francisco au comté de Marin, vers le nord.
  • L'architecte Joseph Strauss le dota d'un petit côté art déco subtil. Chaque semaine, 25 peintres utilisent environ 2 tonnes de minium pour l'entretien ininterrompu de la structure métallique. Celle-ci est soutenue par de colossaux câbles dont tous les filins mis bout à bout s'étendraient sur 129.000 km ! Et, par mauvais temps, le pont pouvant osciller de 7 m, on se sent alors rassuré qu'il soit maintenu par autant de kilomètres de câbles…
