English: A disassembled 100 kW Goldschmidt alternator radio transmitter at Eilvese, Germany in 1924, showing the large rotor. The Goldschmidt alternator, invented in 1908 by Rudolph Goldschmidt, was a rotating machine used as a radio transmitter briefly during the 1920s. It was used in a few super power longwave radiotelegraphy stations to transmit transoceanic telegram traffic between nations. The Eilvese station was Germany's main contact with the outside world during World War 1 and was used, along with a sister station in Tuckerton, New Jersey, USA, by US President Woodrow Wilson and Kaiser Wilhelm to negotiate the Armistice which ended World War 1.
The Goldschmidt machine was turned by a 250 HP DC motor at 3000 RPM, and transmitted up to 100 kW of output power at 24 kHz, which drove an enormous antenna consisting of a ring of 390 ft. steel masts 3000 ft.in diameter, connected by an umbrella-shaped network of wires. The rotor weighs several tons and rotates with a narrow clearance of 0.8 mm within the stator assembly. To prevent eddy current losses it is made of thin 0.5 mm steel laminations separated by paper sheets.
