Description
English: This true-color image of Typhoon Goni, known in the Philippines as Rolly, was captured on October 31, 2020, at 01:32 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) (09:32 AM Philippine Local Time) by the Sentinel-3B satellite, which was launched in April 2018. Goni was the nineteenth named storm, ninth typhoon, and second violent typhoon of the below-average but impactful 2020 Pacific typhoon season. It originated west of the Mariana Islands on October 27 and quickly intensified as it moved westward toward the Philippines.

At the time the image was taken, Goni had winds of 210 km/h (130 mph) and a pressure of 915 mbar (27.02 inHg) according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), classifying it as a violent typhoon. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) reported winds of 300 km/h (185 mph) and a pressure of 895 mbar (26.43 inHg), making it equivalent to a extremely powerful Category 5 major hurricane.

Goni eventually made landfall in the Philippines as an extremely powerful typhoon, with the JMA reporting winds of 220 km/h (135 mph) and a minimum central pressure of 905 mbar (26.72 inHg). According to the JTWC, it made landfall with winds of 315 km/h (195 mph) and a pressure of 884 mbar (26.10 inHg), making it the strongest landfall in the Western Pacific since Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) seven years earlier. Goni was responsible for 32 fatalities and caused damages amounting to $1.02 billion (2020 USD).
