Summary edit

Description

(8 June 2015)

The iced tea color of the water is due to the presence of tannins (= organic compounds derived from plants).

The rocks are olivine tholeiite basalts (some are amygdaloidal) of the ~1.1 billion year old North Shore Volcanic Series. These basalts are flood lavas that filled up an ancient rift valley (= Lake Superior segment of the Mid-Continent Rift System), representing a tear in the ancient North American paleocontinent of Laurentia.

Stratigraphy of rocks: Gooseberry River Basalts, Upper Southwest Sequence, North Shore Volcanic Group, upper Mesoproterozoic, 1097-1098 Ma

Locality: Gooseberry Falls - Main Falls (Middle Falls), Gooseberry River, a little inland from the North Shore of Lake Superior, northeastern Minnesota, USA
